Remote work – pt. 3.1: Flexible working hours

In this post, we look into flexible working hours and flexible work location from the employer perspective; how it can work in practice and what results it can bring. We have also interviewed Love Sahlin (CEO at Web Tech Media Group), Thomas Aziz (CEO at Crisp Film) and Oscar Sandström(Founder at Viseo) to find out how they apply flexibility in their respective company and what results they have seen.

A company example: At Crisp Film, there are no set working hours, the employees are individually responsible for how they plan their days.

Flexible working hours is both trendy and a popular demand from employees nowadays. As a response to that demand, this is often offered by employers to their employees with the requirement that the employees perform the work that is expected from them. As digitalisation enables digital communication, working from home or remotely is also becoming more popular.

While some companies offer more and more flexibility, others are quite strict with 8 hours a day at the office. Overall, we are definitely moving away from the traditional 8-5 work schedule, but to what extent can differ from company to company due to what industry the company is in or how the business is built.

Having work-life balance is highly important when it comes to career aspirations, as shown in Universum’s Sweden Rankings among others. Therefore, it is important that companies encourage and enable their employees to create a good balance in order to be regarded as an attractive employer. An employer can promote work-life balance in several ways, where offering flexible working hours and workplace is one of them.

From the employer perspective

From the employee perspective, this kind of flexibility is often seen as something positive and an important benefit when it comes to choosing an employer. From the employer perspective, however, it can be a bit trickier. Although it will most likely improve employee satisfaction and in extension the employer branding, it can be hard to measure and control the employees. How can a company ensure the employees are getting the work done if they are working from home or flexing with the working hours?

An answer to this question is to implement measuring or reporting tools and guidelines that are suited for the business itself. An example could be to set daily/weekly/monthly objectives or KPIs for each employee, but of course, what is best suited differs for every company.

A company example: Viseo applies both flexible working hours and flexible work location. At Viseo, the employees choose whether they want to work from the office in Stockholm or from the other side of the world.

Company examples

To give some real life examples of how flexible working hours can look in practice, we have talked to three companies based in Stockholm. These three are all offering flexible working hours and location but to different extents.

Love Sahlin (CEO at Web Tech Media Group), Thomas Aziz (CEO at Crisp Film) and Oscar Sandström(Founder at Viseo) all say they have seen positive results in employee satisfaction and productivity when implementing flexible working hours. When it comes to working remotely or from home, the results have differed. While some see remote working as perfectly suited for their employees and businesses, it has not given the desired results for others.
